Virginia Premier: “Powered by VCU Health” for Two Decades
RICHMOND, Va. – Two decades ago, Virginia Premier became a wholly owned entity of the VCU Health System, cementing an important partnership in providing access to affordable, quality health care to thousands of Virginians.
“As the health care landscape has evolved over time, so have we; yet we’ve remained rooted in providing personalized service to those in need,” commented Linda Hines, Virginia Premier CEO.
The company began as Virginia Chartered in 1995 as a partnership between VCU Medical Center and PCP Healthcare Corporation. It was a much needed Medicaid HMO serving 15,000 members in the Central Virginia and Tidewater regions.
As a managed care organization (MCO) wholly owned by VCU, that partnership expanded its services in 2000 to provide treatment for uninsured individuals, through the Virginia Coordinated Care plan. In 2007, Virginia Premier became accredited with the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
Today, Virginia Premier is the second largest Medicaid plan in Virginia, with multiple offices across the state, serving about 220,000 people throughout the Commonwealth. Its steady growth continues, with Medicare Advantage plans introduced last year. The organization is now preparing to offer individual plans on the Virginia Exchange and the expansion of Medicaid.
“In the not-too-distant future, we anticipate providing access to affordable health care for 350,000 Virginians,” noted Hines. “But more important, we want to be able to serve as their health insurer, offering many options for personalized health care, through all stages of life,” she said. “We will do this by remaining focused on our mission of inspiring healthy living within the communities we serve and applying our innovative approaches to modern care, backed by the power of VCU Health.”
