Member benefits
All children need well-visits and immunizations, even if they’re not sick. Well-visits are doctor visits that can help to detect and prevent health problems. They’re also a good way to get all of your child’s needed shots.
As a Virginia Premier member, your child qualifies for free well-visits.
Virginia Premier will also remind you when your child needs shots, dental visits and well check-ups with the doctor during a specific time frame throughout the year. You may get this reminder by phone call, email, mail, or text message. We also send educational texts as your children grow and reach developmental milestones.
If you need help finding a pediatrician, use our provider search tool.
When should my child get well visits and shots?
What to expect
To make sure your children stay healthy, it is important to know what to expect.
Toddlers and young children
Your child’s well-visits may include a physical exam, shots, a developmental assessment, and a hearing, vision and dental screen. As part of the check-ups at 12 and 24 months, your child should have a lead blood test.
Children five to 12
Your child should be receiving a yearly physical exam, shots, developmental assessment, and a hearing, vision and dental screen. The doctor will also discuss nutrition, physical activity, safety, and home/school life.
Preteens ages 11-12 years
Your pre-teen's annual well-visits are needed and vaccines include Tdap, HPV and Meningococcal.
