Individual and Family Plan Notice to Insured FAQ

On June 26, 2020, a notice was sent to members of Virginia Premier’s Individual and Family Plans informing them that, “beginning January 1, 2021, Virginia Premier will no longer offer an Individual & Family Health Plan in the Virginia Marketplace.”

Below are answers to some questions you may have regarding this notice.

Yes. However, earlier this year, VCU Health System and Sentara Healthcare finalized a transaction for joint ownership of Virginia Premier. Sentara Healthcare is now the majority owner, while VCU Health System retains 20 percent ownership. Virginia Premier and Optima Health Plan are now both part of Sentara Healthcare, but will run as two separate health insurance companies.

No. Virginia Premier is not going out of business. However, effective January 1, 2021, Virginia Premier will no longer offer any Individual & Family Health Plans.

You will not lose your 2020 health coverage. Changes will not go into effect until January 1, 2021. So long as you continue to pay your monthly premiums, your current medical and pharmacy benefits stay active until December 31, 2020. In September 2020, you will hear from Optima Health regarding options for 2021 health plans.

No, the notice is informational, and no action is required. Virginia Premier and Optima Health Plan want to make sure that you know about the changes so that you have a smooth transition from your Virginia Premier plan to your new plan.

Later this year, you will begin to receive information from Optima Health that will recommend a health plan and the other options for coverage in 2021. We are working with our federal and state officials to automatically renew your coverage into a similar plan with Optima Health.
