Finding Support in Stressful Times

You could argue that there are a lot of good reasons to be worried these days: the pandemic, social tensions, upcoming elections and economic troubles, among other things. And these sources of stress can combine in unhelpful ways. For example, social distancing makes it harder to engage in causes we care about.

Especially during times like these, it’s important to make use of the support that is available to you. Stress, whatever the source, can negatively affect our health. That includes our physical health, our relationships, and our mental health.

By partnering with Psych Hub, Virginia Premier is offering our members and the community an extra set of resources to help deal with stress.

Stress, Symptoms and Mental Health

“Mental health” refers to how we feel about ourselves and our ability to manage and cope with our situation. It ties in our emotions and our relationships with others. Our mental health affects most every aspect of our lives, from infancy to old age.

And stress – whether about work, relationships, social change or something else – can result in poor mental health. You might notice this in the form of feelings such as fear, uncertainty, worry, anxiety, confusion, hopelessness, anger or grief.

It’s important to recognize these raw emotions, and to notice what effects they could be having. There are a variety of symptoms that could arise from poor mental health. They include:

  • Insomnia or other changes in sleep
  • Changes in eating patterns
  • difficulty concentrating
  • feeling grief, or being sad or depressed
  • feeling anxious
  • low energy
  • fatigue
  • increased use alcohol, tobacco or other substances

These are just some of the common symptoms. It’s a good idea to consult a doctor about mental health concerns, as they’ll be better able to diagnose any problems.

Caring for Your Mental Health

Recognizing these feelings and these symptoms can go a long way to staying healthy mentally. They are a key part of building your resilience, your ability to cope with stress. That’s especially true when you have the help of a doctor or other healthcare provider.

Even during the pandemic, there are strategies and support you can make use of. Check out this video to learn about some of the mental health issues relating to COVID-19.

In general, when dealing with stress, try to take things one day at a time and use the “baby steps” approach. That way, you can make steady progress rather than feeling overwhelmed.
