WISE, VA – Virginia Premier, the second largest Medicaid insurer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, was proud to support this year’s 20th annual Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic in Wise County. RAM clinics provide free medical, dental, and vision care to rural communities throughout the United States.
Although Medicaid expansion has made healthcare more affordable for thousands of Virginians, Southwest Virginia remains faced with a lack of access to quality medical care. Virginia Premier’s commitment to making care more accessible in these communities can be seen across the region, notably at the Virginia Premier Neighborhood Health Center in Roanoke. This year, Virginia Premier donated over nine hundred health empowerment boxes full of essential items, such as toothbrushes and floss, to the Wise RAM clinic.
The boxes were packed by Virginia Premier staff in Richmond and delivered to clinic attendees by the Bristol field office team. RAM attendees especially loved the cooling towels, which helped keep them comfortable during long waits outside in the summer heat. The toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss in each kit were popular with those at the clinic receiving dental care.
“Making care right in Appalachia is an integral part of building a healthier Virginia,” said RheaLynn Rouse, a member of the Bristol office’s medical outreach team. “The services RAM provides to Appalachia are essential to the health and wellness of the region, and Virginia Premier looks forward to supporting their work in the years to come.”
The Wise RAM clinic ran from June 28 to 30. A total of 1,128 patients were served.
