If you have asthma, do you know what your action plan is? If not, set up a visit with your doctor. They can help you create an asthma action plan, which is kind of like a step-by-step guide on how you can control and lessen the symptoms of your asthma.

For example, say you have asthma, but you also smoke. Part of your action plan could be to quit smoking which means you’ll have access to smoking cessation programs. Having an Asthma Action Plan opens the door to resources you might not think of.

You should update your action plan annually to make sure it fits your current needs. And you should also aim to get your lungs tested periodically, to see how you’re progressing.

But remember, taking your medication and avoiding triggers are the key to controlling your asthma.

Breathe Easy This Spring

In spring, everything comes to life – including allergies. And if you or your child has asthma, you know what this can mean for you: coughing, sneezing, and wheezing. This is because allergies are a common trigger – that is, a cause of symptoms – for those with asthma.

Some common allergies which trigger asthma are: pollen, dust, pets, pollution, and strong odors. In fact, even temperature changes and extreme emotions such as anger can trigger your asthma. There’s no need to worry though. Once you know your triggers, you’ll be better able to avoid them.

Also, make sure you take your allergy medications every day. They won’t cure your allergies, but they can help treat any symptoms you or your child are having.

Staying Active With Asthma

If you or your child has asthma, it’s still possible to stay active and exercise. You just have to take some extra steps to prepare.

For example, make sure you choose an activity or exercise that’s easy for people with asthma. Walking, light biking and even swimming are all great activities for asthmatics because they don’t require long periods of heavy breathing.

Also, remember to take it slow. Warming up, cooling down and breathing through your nose can help you stay calm and keep your breathing under control.

And most importantly, don’t forget your inhaler!
